The Idea
Losing your wallet is not a new problem. Neither is forgetting where you left it inside your house. For one of our product managers, Tracy, this second scenario was an all-too-common occurrence, even when using a wallet that magnetically attached to her iPhone. While searching for solutions to this age-old problem, she came across various attempts. The official MagSafe wallet only showed the last location it was removed from your phone and didn’t have any way to identify its location if it wasn’t visible. There were also wallets that had space to install an AirTag or other tracking device but were ugly, bulky, and didn’t magnetically attach to her phone. Not to mention both of these solutions were pricey. She realized that there was a problem that needed solving and the process of brainstorming solutions began the next day. After countless workshops, meetings, and hours of market research, the initial design concept for the HaloLock™ Geo Wallet Stand was born. A MagSafe-compatible wallet with Full Find My functionality that adds convenient everyday-use features that other MagSafe-compatible wallets don’t have.
The Challenges
The biggest issues our design team faced during the design process were related to incorporating the necessary electronic components into the wallet. The early days were focused on finding the best way to do this so that we didn’t have to compromise in other areas. Eventually, we managed to find a design that used as little space as possible and ensured the aesthetic and feel of the product weren’t negatively affected. Once the Find My module and other components had been dealt with, we had to work out the best way to power them.
The wallet needed to be independently powered and always on. We either had to incorporate a large battery that would provide years of use but couldn’t be recharged, or a smaller battery that could be recharged and lasted several months. We concluded that in order to ensure the wallet had a long lifespan and to save space, we had to go with a smaller rechargeable battery. Using a USB-C port was out of the question as it would have been too thick, so we developed a proprietary magnetic pin charging system to make charging quick and easy without adding a large, unsightly port. We made sure the charging port sat flush with the inside of the wallet and matched its color, allowing us to solve the issue of power without negatively impacting the visual design.
The Final Touches
Working prototypes have been tested by 50 members of the ESR team from different countries, departments, and genders and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. We’ve used their suggestions to optimize the design and tweak some things to ensure the best user experience possible.
